Sagarmatha Mountain Eco Hotel
About the project:
An extraordinary project: In the high altitudes of the Himalayans, one of the most influential Sherpa families plans on realising a sustainable hotel concept – under most difficult circumstances and hostile natural extremes, set in the periphery of the world’s highest mountain – the Mount Everest. Their goal: establishing lighthouse projects in two locations that serve as role models in the areas of sustainable high-quality tourism, building physics and architecture, fair trade and work safety, training and know-how transfer.
The project oscillates between extremes: tradition and modernity, environmental protection and awareness despite restricted resources and adamant natural conditions. It nevertheless is important to the owners to establish local, regional and international understanding for the positive effects on holistic sustainability and climate protection, the conservation of resources, health, quality and efficiency increase, economy and labour market.
The venture is supported by the Fraunhofer Institute for building physics and it was for the second time awarded ‘Official Project of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development ’ in 2014.
