The task.
Cobblestones, half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, steep stairways: Altensteig’s “historical mile” is remarkably beautiful. Nonetheless, since the Neues Rathaus (new town hall) was built back in 2006, daily life in the Black Forest community tended to take place below and outside the old town.
The project goal in this case was therefore to breathe new life into Altensteig’s listed old town and the empty buildings in it, and in doing so boost the area’s economic power.

In October 2012, the concept of opening a village hotel in the historical old town was presented to interested citizens. It envisaged creating a “village within a village” that would be integrated into the historical town centre, thus making use of the existing infrastructure and creating additional facilities.
Our operating concept proposed what is known as an albergo diffuso, a model that, while centrally organised, would offer accommodation facilities stretching over several buildings in the old town. It would also serve to market the unique appeal of the area as a whole.
